Lab 8 Part B: Virtual Camera

This is the second half of lab 8.  Its the action of a camera moving around the map.  I just repeated the same map as the previous part with the same issue.  Then I used classic tweens in the animation itself to move around the map and kept the frame rate at 24 fps so even though its fast its smooth.  In addition there are start and stop buttons that allow you to pause then start the animation from that point at any time.

Lab 8, Part A: Pan and Zoom

This is a map of all the teams that have existed in Major League Soccer during its history.  As well as the approximated areas of where their fans were to be found.  Panning and zooming allow exploration of the map.  Unforunately masking didn't work so its not exact to the coasts.  In addition, an effective base map for Canada was not to be found.  Since this map will be used in my final project this issue will hopefully eventually be addressed.  The next part of this lab is to create a virtual camera that pans and zooms around the map with start and stop buttons.

Lab 7: Flash Effects (Splash screen, rollovers, and hyperlinks): Operation Barbarossa

This is the final version of the Operation Barbarossa map.  In this map, the shape tween from lab 6 was modified to a more difficult version, that isn't as clean.  A splash screen has been added to the front end.  This was done via having a new scene in front of the scene containing the map, and then adding features to it.  The intial word on the splash screen is german for "Play!" and when rolled over shows the english translation.  This leads into the next part of the splash screen which contains a brief introduction to Operation Barbarossa, as well as links to websites for more information as well as the order of battle for both sides.  In addition, music has been added to the splash screen it is "Dark Ages" performed by Two Steps from Hell.  In order to move onto the map, roll over the Hitler qoute at the bottom center of the splash screen revealing the English translation and click.  This brings us into the actual map.  The added features to this map are roll over effects on the flags.  When each flag is rolled over information is presented in bottom center of the map concernign each nation's participation in World War 2.  An extra button was added to the timeline control to jump back to the splash screen with the links; however, I also found that by clicking the play button following the completion of the animation you are jumped back to the opening splash screen.  Also a qoute was added towards the beginning of the animation.

Final Project Proposal

As it is the centennial year of the United States Soccer Federation (USSF), I thought it would be interesting to make a map of the significant events in that hundred year time span.  However, that would be just an easy challenge easily completed.  So, to make it more interesting as well as more challenging I will make several other maps.  A map showing the growth of professional and amateur soccer leagues that are noted by USSF, as well as the sides in each of those.  In addition, for Major League Soccer (MLS) the current top flight league in the states I will show the history as it has grown and shrunk in its 17 year history.  Soccer has been a passion of mine since I played it when I was younger throughout the moves as my dad changed postings in his Air Force Career, from playing in organized youth leagues to playing pickup backyard games at recess and after school.  Soccer, known as football in other parts of the world, is a truly international sport and is a game for anyone and everyone.

But women play too, and the US Women’s National Team is currently ranked #1 in the FIFA standings.  And starting next month the new iteration of top flight Professional Women’s soccer will being playing in the National Women’s Soccer League with 8 teams.  The several previous iterations have folded; let’s hope this one stays around for more than a few seasons.  So in honor of this new beginning I will make a map showing how professional Women’s soccer has evolved here in the United States and around the world as more countries start their own women’s national teams.  Representing your country on the pitch is a huge privilege, and the countries who give not only men but also women that opportunity deserve to be recognized.

The world is beginning to take notice of soccer in the US, and realizing that our leagues just aren’t a place for 30-somethings at the end of their careers to go and play.  Our leagues are a place to go to look for talent, as well as to get great games.  In addition, since 1990 the US has steadily become more of a force regionally within CONCACAF as well as globally with famous results that were unexpected.  Just last November, we tied the then #9 team in the world Russia on their home soil 2-2.  We got our first ever win against Mexico on Mexican soil in 75 years last August, though other countries like point out that it was an international friendly match.  There is no such thing when it comes to the USA-Mexico soccer rivalry.  Another famous result in recent memory is the 2-0 win over Spain the semifinal round of the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, we would go on to lose 3-2 to Brazil in the final.  It has taken the US 100 years to get to this point, but we have gotten to the point where we are a respected nation in world soccer circles.

Lab 6: Shape Tweens: Operation Barbarossa, The German Invasion of the Soviet Union , Summer 1941

Taking lab 5 and adding a shape tween showing the German advance from the intial jump off point, and adding more sounds.  In addition, the writing is now all in German.  The chosen German verb for to hold actually menas to absorb and makes more sense in this case.  In addition, the new legend element indicates what the overlay of the advance on top of the intial soviet positions should look like.

Weekly Blog Post 3: Interactive Timeline map

http://www.conflicthistory.com/#/period/0134BC-0126BC

This is an interesting map with a scrolling timeline that shows the loacations of conflicts throughout the ages.  You may not be able to click on specific year to jump to it as the years themsleves are not buttons.  Instaed the map uses arrow buttons to either side of hte timline to scroll through the time line which is an interesting feature in and of itself.  The conflicts will show even if you place the highlighted part of the timeline between two hashmarks and show the conflicts occuring around the globe at the time.

Lab 2 Flip Book Map: Road to Super Bowl XXVII for the Champion Dallas Cowboys

This is a flip book of static maps that shows the Dallas Cowboy's road to their win in Super Bowl XXVII.  Every map shows where that week's game was played as well as the score and the team that won.  The score also contains the stadium and the location of the stadium where the game was played.

2/17/13: This post update is an edit I just caught the goof on my part of not having replaced the Chiefs helmet with a Raiders helmet in week 8.
